  222. From experience I can tell you that if you offer good service and support
  223. for your members they will grow. There will be a battle among Apple
  224. and Apple II users for some time. Many of them feel abandoned by Apple.
  225. This leaves the leaders of dual Apple groups with a delima. Most have
  226. separate meetings for Apple II and Macintosh. The problem is the
  227. two groups have very little in common. 
  228.   
  229. Most Mac folks want to come to a meeting and see Macintosh exclusively
  230. if they have a choice. Your group can meet those needs. Ignore 
  231. the other groups efforts to bring you down it will only hurt them
  232. in the end. Users do not like to hear negitive thoughts about
  233. those who donate their time and energy to support their favorite
  234. computer.
  235.   
  236. Use your AppleLink account to get good speakers. Promote training 
  237. within the group. Start a Macintosh public domain library. Open
  238. a Macintosh BBS if possible. Mac folks will come.
  239.

  260. On June 1, 1991,  AMUG will host a special member auction. Members may bring
  261. their software or hardware to the auction that they do not need and it will
  262. be sold to the highest bidder. Items may be sent to 718 E. Campbell Ave.,
  263. Gilbert,
  264. AZ 85234, brought to the May 16, 1991 meeting or collected from 10:30 to 1:00PM
  265. at the auction. AMUG will receive 25% of all proceeds. The auction will run
  266. from 12:00 noon to 5:00PM. This meeting will be from 11:00AM to 5:30PM in
  267. Phoenix
  268. at the Howard Johnson Hotel, located at University and the Freeway.

  270. If anyone is interested in attending or providing items let me know. You
  271. may want to try something like this for your group. We also had an auction
  272. last Oct for new stuff donated by vendors and it was really successful.

  383. convert Second Sight BBS file descriptions to Telefinder Get Info format. This
  384. is the first utility on the market to interchange file section descriptions
  385. between Second Sight and Telefinder bulletin board systems.
  386.   
  387. MacWizards will now provide SS->TF Filer to the Macintosh market. This
  388. utility was developed to automate Telefinder file description inputting from
  389. Second Sight file directories. SS->TF Filer was  originally developed to
  390. automate
  391. Telefinder compatibility for MacWizards new BBS in a BOX CD . Telefinder
  392. descriptions
  393. were written to over 7,000 files on the CD with this utility.
  394.   
  395. SS->TF Filer produces a resource file that is pasted into each download file
  396. listed in the Second Sight directory. This resource then allows Telefinder BBS
  397. users to view the description of the file by using the Get Info command. Based
  398. on the description users can then pass over the file or download it.

  400. SS->TF Filer has several purposes for the Macintosh BBS system operator:
  401.   
  402. 1). SS->TF Filer may be utilized to automate the transfer of file sections from
  403. a Second Sight file section format to a Telefinder iconic BBS format produced
  404. by Spider Island of Irvine, CA.

  406. 2). SS->TF Filer may be used to copy file descriptions from updated Second Sight
  407. file sections and create Telefinder description resources automatically in a
  408. dual Second Sight and Telefinder shared BBS system as run by the Arizona
  409. Macintosh
  410. Users Group. The utility has the ability to update the size information in the
  411. Second Sight directory after creating the Telefinder resource data and attaching
  412. it to the download file. In this way, the Second Sight directory can be used
  413. to automate Telefinder description creation and have its size information of
  414. the file be accurate.

  416. 3). SS->TF Filer allows Telefinder users to create iconic functioning 
  417. description files from easy to use Second Sight Utilities such as Chriss 
  418. Kochs TidE file editor. This process also allows Telefinder users the ability
  419. to create Master download database information about their files on-line and
  420. create text file descriptions from Second Sight directory tools such as FSP
  421. and others. The use of this multi-BBS platform tool is limited only by the
  422. Second
  423. Sight/Telefinder BBS system  operators imagination.

  425. Future versions may also include the ability to convert from Telefinder file
  426. format to Second Sight directories should there be a demand for such a tool.

  594. 190 people at 46 institutions, and is in use at Medical School Libraries and
  595. Learning Resource Centers in over 150 institutions.  We are very excited to
  596. bring all of these people together to improve communication and software
  597. production.  It's not too late to volunteer to present, so your colleagues can
  598. see the variety of topics, approaches, user interfaces and instructional
  599. designs that have been implemented.  Any evaluation data is also welcome;
  600. as well as a one or two page summary handout to share with others.  We will
  601. emphasize software and hardware demonstrations using the SOL, including
  602. updates on indexes, authoring systems, evaluation, and production.  Projects

  674. I think that computer magazines should have long term tests such as car and
  675. drivers where they give a specific piece of equipment non-stop use for a length
  676. of time and report on it's maintenance and wear and tear, I imagine that these
  677. magazines get new equipment on a regular basis and don't get much of a chance
  678. to break anything in to the point where it would start to show wear and tear.

  696.  I run a TBBS system so a bit of manipulation would be required to put a mac
  697. cd online but if there were good textual descriptions of the files it would
  698. be well worth it.

  839. bulk and limited (among even its intended audience) need should be encouraged.

  1216. Phoenix, Arizona-- May 6, 1991 -- MacWizards releases new software utility for
  1217. Macintosh Second Sight BBS Fidonet systems. Fidonet contains over 6,000 nodes
  1218. worldwide with private and public mail services. The new product developed is
  1219. named Origin Counter and Sectalyze. This technology will allow Macintosh Second
  1220. Sight BBS Fidonet systems the ability to track who is contributing to the public
  1221. echoes and statistics about them.
  1222.   
  1223. Features of Origin Counter and Sectalyze include:
  1224.   
  1225. 1). The ability to create a database in tab format containing the BBS systems
  1226. participating on the echo during a certain period, sysop name, number of posts,
  1227. city, state, BBS phone number, and Fidonet node number.
  1228.   
  1229. 2). The ability to create a text justified report for posting in a message or
  1230. for BBS users viewing. This tool will allow BBS users to know who may read and
  1231. respond to their messages, they may post in a particular echo. This listing
  1232. contains the BBS systems name, sysop, number of posts, city, state, and Fidonet
  1233. node number. Here is an example:

  1293. individual point systems off of any BBS. This information will help Sysops under
  1294. stand the impact of their point systems and how the activity of points compares
  1295. to local message posting.

  1297. How does it work?
  1298. Origin Counter and Sectalyze work as a team. Origin Counter collects the data
  1299. necessary to create the reports. This is done by running Origin Counter in the
  1300. Tabby event. Each time new messages arrive Origin Counter writes the names of
  1301. the nodes that have incoming messages and writes this information in the Tabby
  1302. folder. Later at the system operators leisure Sectalyze will evaluate the data,
  1303. retrieve information from the nodelist and write reports requested by the system
  1304. operator. Once Origin Counter is installed and Sectalyze reports are initially
  1305. created, reports can be updated simply by running Sectalyze again.

  1623. their national conference. At this sixth annual "gathering of the tribes,"
  1624. leaders will:

  1629. unique experiences so others may benefit from them. >Explore the possibilities

  1632. At this first-ever west-coast holding of the conference, groups can do all
  1633. this - and more, in a relaxing environment. And, thanks to generous
  1634. sponsorship and university facilities, a weekend at Powwow can cost less than

  1638. WHY A NAUGC?

  1640. For the last five years, Apple II and Macintosh user group leaders have
  1641. gathered annually, at National Apple User Group Conferences. These gatherings,
  1642. held mainly in the midwest, have provided a meeting ground for diverse groups
  1643. to discuss, explore and share their experiences, as well as talk to industry
  1644. leaders and vendors.
  1645.    
  1646. By exchanging information, groups can better serve their members. Attendees
  1647. can learn about the mechanics of leading groups, motivating volunteers,
  1648. recruiting members, and the simple mechanics of day-to-day operation, as well
  1649. as teach other groups about their unique experiences. In addition, they can
  1650. talk about the particulars of the CONTENT of groups: The latest in Mac and
  1651. Apple II hardware and software solutions, system software, and ideas. They can
  1652. bring together input from their members and influence the industry in ways
  1653. impossible for individual groups to do.
  1654.    
  1655. Each year's conference is hosted by a different group, in a different
  1656. location.
  1657.    
  1658. SPECIFIC CONTENT:
  1659.    
  1660. Powwow, the 1991 NAUGC, will feature some really exciting discussions and
  1661. panels. It will include small workshops as well as large panels and
  1662. presentations. Every attendee will be involved in the program - not just
  1663. listening, but sharing your concerns, opinions, and experiences.
  1664.    
  1665. The goal is not just professional but social - to get to know other user group
  1666. leaders better, and build the contacts that you can tap on year-round. Build
  1667. inter-group relationships, exchanges, and the like. We have arranged for
  1668. entertainment and free-time as part of the conference, so you can explore the
  1669. beautiful San Francisco Bay Area and the wonderful Berkeley city and campus.
  1670. Weather permitting, a number of sessions, and some meals, will be held
  1671. outdoors.
  1672.    
  1673. To help attendees better organize and manage their groups, we'll have speakers
  1674. from other non-profit organizations in other fields, as well as organizations
  1675. that specialize in helping non-profits. You can learn from the many other
  1676. communities out there that resemble user groups in many, many ways - but have
  1677. decades of experience.
  1678.    
  1679. Of particular interest to Macintosh user groups is System 7. Several members
  1680. of the development team from Apple will speak, and selected third-party
  1681. developers will show new applications that take advantage of 7.0. A series of
  1682. sessions will teach how to teach your members about 7.0, and help them through
  1683. the upgrade process.
  1684.    
  1685. And Apple II groups certainly won't be neglected. A number of sessions will
  1686. focus on their needs, and look at HyperCard IIgs and other recent innovations
  1687. that are bringing fresh life to the Apple II community. Although Raines Cohen,
  1688. the conference chair, is known mostly as a Mac guy, he's had an Apple II since
  1689. 1979, and started an Apple II users group, the Newton Apple Kids. Keep in
  1690. mind, though, that most groups will be Mac groups, and some sessions and
  1691. vendors will be of interest primarily to Mac users. We'll do the best we can
  1692. to keep a balance.
  1693.    
  1694. We want the conference to be useful to community groups, in-house groups, and
  1695. professional groups, even though the logistical needs of these types of
  1696. organizations differ. We'll have breakouts for large, small, growing, and
  1697. shrinking groups, as well as sessions designed to bring them together.
  1698.    
  1699. In fact, don't be surprised to see a few PC groups at the conference as well.
  1700. So much about user groups really isn't connected to what kind of computer you
  1701. use - it's the experience of running a group that we have in common. We can
  1702. gain some useful insights into our own community by bringing in "outsiders"
  1703. to
  1704. share their experiences.
  1705.    
  1706. Unlike the NAUGCs of past years, Powwow will not include a vendor fair. We
  1707. feel there are so many tradeshows going on now that to exhibit would be very
  1708. difficult and expensive for many vendors, and of little benefit to the
  1709. attendees. Instead, we're having special hospitality suites and presentations
  1710. by selected vendors, and integrating some of the one-on-one vendor functions
  1711. into the program. We're encouraging developers to focus on giving us technical
  1712. information that we can redistribute to groups, as well as general product
  1713. information for your benefit.

  1809. We don't recommend renting a car, unless you are taking a vacation in
  1810. conjunction with the conference. We can provide parking, if we know in
  1811. advance, for a small fee.

  1813. Greyhound and Amtrak both provide service to nearby Oakland on at least a
  1814. daily basis. Let us know if you are planning to come by train; you may well
  1815. end up on the same train as other attendees, link up with them, and get a
  1816. headstart on the conference.

  1818. We recommend arriving early in the afternoon of Friday, June seventh, and
  1819. departing late afternoon on Sunday, June ninth; however, we can accomodate
  1820. arrivals as early as Thursday afternoon and departures as late as Monday
  1821. morning, with advance notice (get out and enjoy the Bay Area!). A slight extra
  1822. fee will apply ($30/night). All attendees are welcome to attend the regular
  1823. Thursday night meeting of BMUG, a local user group, and join that group for
  1824. dinner.

  1826. ACCOMODATIONS:

  1828. The conference will almost entirely take place in and around the U.C. Berkeley
  1829. dorms. Accordingly, we strongly encourage all attendees to stay there. The
  1830. spacious, recently remodeled rooms, have carpeting, draperies, solid oak beds,
  1831. desk, and wardrobes. They most likely bear little resemblance to the dorm
  1832. rooms you may remember from your college years.
  1833.    
  1834. Bathrooms are shared among others on a floor, but very private, have
  1835. individual showers, and are same-sex (except on designated floors for
  1836. couples). All facilities are designed to be wheelchair-accessible; please
  1837. indicate on the registration form if you need handicapped facilities.

  1839. Several swimming and sports facilities are available for the convenience of
  1840. attendees. For $2-6, you can swim in Olympic-size pools; play tennis, squash,
  1841. handball, and racquetball; and use the weight rooms.

  1845. We encourage attendees to stay at the dorms, for the fullest experience of the
  1846. conference. We recommend the double rooms for the best rate; we will match you

  2370. This is to announce the 3rd (annual) Apple II/Macintosh User Group conference
  2371. known as AMUGshot. In past years it has been held in the Corvallis/Eugene areas
  2372. of Oregon. This year it will be held in Wilsonville, OR, slightly further north
  2373. and closer to Portland. In the next few days, many of you on the west coast
  2374. will be receiving an invitation along with more information. Please respond

  2380. Although things may not have been completely firmed up I believe the following
  2381. things will be happening. I know this sounds not too together, but most of the
  2382. planning is being done by one of our members who lives at a distance, and he
  2383. hasn't conveyed the final schedule to me as yet. Nonetheless, many things are
  2384. scheduled. Craig Elliot will be coming to represent Apple and to give us the
  2385. very latest on what's happening with the user group connection and within
  2386. Apple. Enrique Zamora, a system Engineer from Apple's Lake Oswego office will
  2387. be presenting several of Apple's new projects as well as orchestrating a System
  2388. 7 session which will answer many of your technical questions. In additon,
  2389. answers to other questions like distribution and support of System 7, HyperCard
  2390. 2.1+ and other aspects of managing the transition will be addressed. Microsoft,
  2391. Broderbund, Beagle Brothers, Now Utilities, and Central Point Software will
  2392. be
  2393. in attendance and will be doing presentations and having representatives there
  2394. to help answer questions about their products. There may be other vendors as
  2395. well. There will be an intense networking session in which the user group
  2396. representatives will discuss various aspects of starting, running, maintaining
  2397. user groups, as well as addressing fund raising, volunteerism, projects,
  2398. education, and support issues.
  2399.

  2401. This conferece will take place May 18 and 19 at the Holiday Inn at Wilsonville
  2402. (Stafford Exit off I-5). Accomodations for attendees may be at one of the local

  2444. announced today System 7 versions of Retrospect and Retrospect Remote, their
  2445. Eddy Award winning backup and archiving programs.  Version 1.3 provides full
  2446. compatibility with Apples System 7, backing up and restoring aliases,
  2447. implementing balloon help and supporting File Sharing and Virtual Memory.  The
  2448. maximum archive size has been increased 500 times to 1 Terabyte (1000
  2449. Gigabytes), and new integrity testing increases backup reliability.  All owners
  2450. of Version 1.2 will receive a free upgrade within two weeks, while all owners
  2451. of previous versions may upgrade for $35.
  2452.    
  2453. We are sending 1.3 as a free upgrade to all owners of Version 1.2 with a
  2454. simple message, said Dantz Development President, Larry Zulch, backup before
  2455. you switch to System 7, and backup after you switch to System 7.  Weve made
  2456. Retrospect and Retrospect Remote compatible with both Systems 6 and 7 to make
  2457. the transition as safe and seamless as possible.

  2459. The calendar launch and shutdown operations provide for unattended, fully
  2460. automatic backups.  Retrospect 1.3 makes full use of System 7.0s process
  2461. manager and increases its compatibility with Macintosh Virtual Memory.
  2462.    
  2463.  We are particularly excited about integrating Retrospect with System 7, said
  2464. Richard Zulch, VP Engineering, using the Finder to select files simply by
  2465. dragging them to the Retrospect application icon.  It doesnt get any easier
  2466. than that.

  2468. Version 1.3 refines and enhances many of Retrospects earlier features.
  2469. Retrospects snapshot capability, the key to automatic restoring even after
  2470. multiple incremental backups, now supports snapshots of up to 240 different
  2471. volumes in a single archive. Retrospects archiving features allow the storage
  2472. of seldom used files in an archive, freeing valuable hard disk space.  The
  2473. Remotes window, which enables Retrospect to work over the network, now operates
  2474. 20-50 times faster than before while producing far less network traffic.
  2475. Auto-login ensures security by automatically mounting an AppleShare or File
  2476. Sharing volume, performing the backup, and then unmounting it when the backup
  2477. is complete. Remote start-up files can be upgraded over the network from the
  2478. administration machine without manually accessing each remote workstation,
  2479. making the upgrade process smooth and simple.  Retrospects support of all
  2480. standard storage devices combined with its suite of verification, comparison
  2481. and rebuilding tools provides a complete and automatic backup and archiving
  2482. solution.

  2843. all this at our fingertips, we should not want to clutter up a GREAT echo with

  3053. licensing paperwork.  The text of the letter leads me to belive it was only
  3054. sent to registered users groups that had not yet signed an SLA.  The paper work
  3055. is due by May 6th (or was it the 8th... I don't have it in front of me)...

  3340. Connection place or anything. But you CAN ask for info about starting a user

  3392. Today I got in the UPS (i.e. front door...why didn't that come before? Hmmm...)
  3393. a BIG package from Apple...had the usual stuff (video, 2 APDAlogs, etc etc etc)
  3394. but the best part was the cover letter. It said, or something to this effect
  3395. (for all of those who don't already know, and to clarify the situation once
  3396. and for all.) :
  3397.   
  3398. Any MUG that has a Software License on file already will get Sys7 *free* of
  3399. charge "a few days after the introduction" and those who didn't sign a S.L.
  3400. but got a different letter and returned it by May 6th would get it free "at
  3401. the end of May.".

  3403. This is good. I guess we all save $100.
